Nazli Yesiller
Dr. Nazli Yesiller is the Director of the Global Waste Research Institute. She has her B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Bogazici University, Turkey and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her main research interests include geoenvironmental engineering and waste and byproduct management. Her specific research interests in waste management include determination of engineering properties and response of wastes, investigation of properties and behavior of natural and synthetic components of liner systems, determination of heat production and heat transfer in landfills, thermal analysis of landfill systems, integrated heat and gas generation analysis in landfills, recycling regulations and recycling infrastructure, and the use of multiple integrated technologies for waste management. Specific research topics in beneficial reuse of byproducts include investigation of use of tire chips for absorption of organics, determination of engineering properties of geo-materials amended with various wastes and byproducts, evaluation of beneficial reuse of corrugated fiber board in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering applications, and investigation of reuse of industrial sludges and agricultural wastes. She is also interested in use of nondestructive testing, image analysis, and surface topography analysis for containment materials, wastes and byproducts, and waste and byproduct amended materials and components. Her research studies include long-term experimental investigations. She is interested in development of test methods and equipment and standardization of test procedures. Dr. Yesiller is active in professional service both nationally and internationally. She serves and chairs committees of ASTM, ASCE, TRB, and NRC and is co-organizer and co-chair of the tri-annual U.S.-Japan Geoenvironmental Engineering Workshop. She is an editorial board member of the ASTM Geotechnical Testing Journal. She serves as proposal reviewer for NSF and as manuscript reviewer and organizer for various national and international publications and conferences.
